Today, on the subway, I saw one of the strangest sights I’ve ever seen:
A woman eating raw kale, carrot, parsnip, and turnip. All raw. And without stopping.
(I like me some raw carrot, but raw turnip?!?)

My face just puckered. And these days one can never be sure if the pucker will come out again.

Carol Alt was on Fox this morning talking up eating “Raw” and how cooking kills the enzymes in food. Maybe it’s the new “in” thing?
The raw food movement has been around for awhile. Sex and the City did a hysterical episode where the women went to a raw food restaurant. There are several in New York, including one called Pure Food & Wine. Lots of celebs have jumped on the bandwagon including Donna Karan, and I think Demi Moore. Personally, while I like raw spinach, and broccoli, some vegetables seriously need to be cooked to be palatable.
I accidentally ate a piece of raw turnip. For whatever reason, I thought it was a radish. And I thought it was a very good radish until my husband corrected me. (Yes, I am pre-menupausal, don’t even ask!)
I knew about the raw food thing, but I just didn’t get the impression that this woman was trendy about food. She was–odd-looking. Just not the type to jump on a food trend. It’s hard to describe without being insulting.
Sandy, maybe I should try some turnip–I think I am peri-menopausal, too, and I do like radishes.
