There's some sort of "Write a Novel in November" progam which I'm too lazy to link to right now which could provide the virtual kick.
But, hey, a parental visit or just the thought thereof makes me whine and gain weight, so don't fret it, I say.
My version of self-help is either my handy-dandy aphorism book or sad-beautiful music. I recommend the second movement of Mozart's 23rd piano concerto (A major) K.488. Seriously. By the second entrance of the bassoon, I'm usually past the self-pity and in a more universal charitable-pity.
But now I just sound like a wuss.
Still, I recommend it, and iTunes let's you buy just the second movent in the version with Richard Goode on piano and the Orpheus chamber orchestra.
