Meljean–sorry to mislead, I actually didn’t notice the author until after I posted the post.
Chester Himes was an AA author who wrote mysteries and other books featuring AA characters–this cover is definitely misleading, it implies a lot of stuff that isn’t happening.
I’ve only read his novels featuring Coffin Ed Johnson and Gravedigger Jones, New York City police detectives in Harlem, and they were really good, if really gritty.
