Watching The Defectives*
Tonight, like so many of you, we’ll be watching the Debate. Got nothing really to say on that one, except I am astonished to find myself so involved and passionate. I’ve always thought of myself–rather dismissively–as kind of laissez-faire. Not anymore.
I got good feedback from the Delightful Phone Friend regarding On Bold Adventure, which I’ve been working on consistently. Still no word from those editors to whom New Agent sent The Book Formerly Known as Road To Passion to; but at least I haven’t gotten resounding thumbs down.

So I must slog on. I’m not much of an optimist, but I am trying.

Gee, it is mid-month already. I want to look back on some items from earlier this month.
In early Oct. Megan wrote:
6. I don’t like meeting famous people I admire. I figure they’ll just disappoint me in person, or they’ll think I am nothing special.
I don’t recall replying to this number. But, I do have have a meeting a famous person I admire comment to share. One with a different outcome.
Last month, I attended an Al Franken for U.S. Senate (D, MN) fundraising pre-dinner reception, and met the man. He did not disappoint me, and he thought I was something special, I gave him money, after all. He was gracious to all, myself included. This is only fair, I gave him money. (Oh, I said that already).
The evening more than confirmed my opinion that he is intelligent, accomplished, talented, sincere, and well qualified for the U.S. Senate.
I have watched Franken for years on TV, during the Al Franken decade, and in movies. I have listened to his Air America radio show. On Election Day 2004, I went to a live radio broadcast he did in Cambridge, Mass. He has a slightly different persona in each of these roles, and another as a candidate addressing a room. I think that such shifting is necessary, and I suspect it is typical to have another persona in an interview.
Megan can feed her involvement and passion by telling all her Minnesota friends and family to vote for Al Franken for U.S. Senate on Election Day, and even consider making a contribution (time or money are popular ways) to his campaign. Franken has a slight lead in some polls, and does Obama. With effort they can each win in Minnesota.
If Megan, and the rest of us, want a good laugh, search for images of Hogarth’s Election series. Lots of fun detail. It is Georgian art, not Regency, I suppose. It does go to show that some things have not changed so much.

Like you, I’m passionate and involved about politics at the moment. And just as surprised about it. It was an interesting debate, that’s for sure.

Hat Rack:
I think those MN relatives are planning on voting for Franken already–one of them is coming to visit before Election Day, so I will ask her. Cool that you got to meet him, I think he’d be a good senator.
Alyssa:
It was interesting–seeing body dynamics really has an impact, whether you want it to or not. Of course I was already biased, but I liked Obama’s coolness (although sometimes I thought he was _too_ cool).
