Writing. Boring.

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

If I were a termite, the whole ‘boring’ thing would take another context entirely.
*
But since I am not, I just have to say that all I am is boring. I am writing still, most every day, and am now officially past the halfway mark with the Work In Progress.

And the laundry has been done, and meals been made, and son managed, etc., blah, etc.

I wish I could be all ‘I discovered this fabulous thing I have to share!’ and ‘I lost five pounds’ (oh, HOW MUCH do I wish that?!?), only I’ve discovered nothing. No, wait–I have discovered one thing:

If you take nonfat plain yogurt, the cheap kind, and line a strainer with a paper towel and strain said yogurt for about 12 hours, give or take, you will have a great approximation of Greek yogurt, which costs at least three times as much as cheap nonfat plain.

Whew. I feel better for having shared.

More later.

Up and Down

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

The upside to being hungry while on Weight Watchers is seeing the scale move down, and knowing I am doing things to help my body image and my health. I figure if I’m hungry, then I’m doing something right.

The downside? I AM REALLY FREAKING HUNGRY!

Distracted

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

It was pointed out that I’ve been quiet lately, which is true. And I wish I could say it’s because I’m working on some fabulous projects, but it’s much more mundane:

I rejoined Weight Watchers. And I’m too hungry/crabby to post anything fun.

Unlike a lot of folks, I gain weight over the summer. I’m traveling more, walking less, with the son more than I am usually, so not heading to the gym–plus there’s barbecue and wine and such. So I had a last food fling in Philly, with cheese steaks and ice cream and a soft pretzel that made me want to cry, and then I went back to points and baby carrots. It’s going well, but I’m grouchy. Grouchier because I know I should be editing faster than I am, and grouchier still because I cleaned my keyboard, and now my space bar key needs a really hard thump to get it working.

And I still haven’t seen Duplicity.

When I get my groove back on, and am less crabby, you’ll be the first to know.

Doughnut Party, the Prelude

Friday, July 24th, 2009

So last week, Carolyn Jewel and I had a doughnut party in our room during RWA. We had several lovely guests join us, but prior to that, it was almost a Doughnut Debacle; see, we decided on that day we would have the party that night, which left us little time to secure the doughnuts. It was my mission to get them, and I went to the hotel concierge desk to ask where I could get them.

First off, Mr. Concierge Guy was so soft-spoken it was hard to hear his Doughnut Deliberations, but eventually I discovered that there was a Whole Foods three metro stops away, and a Krispy Kreme one stop away. Carolyn had a preference for not Krispy Kreme, so I went to the WF. It was the warmest day of RWA, but I dressed for the hotel’s air conditioning, so was wearing a light sweater. Duh on me. Plus Carolyn had shamed me by walking up all the stairs from the very deep below the surface metro, so I responded by doing same on my big day out. Yeah, good day to do that, huh, Megan?

Whole Foods, it turns out, had no doughnuts. None. Zip. And, to finish the trifect, nada.

Back on the metro. Determined to get the doughnuts; after all, it would not be a doughnut party if there were no doughnuts.

I went to Krispy Kreme, after calling Carolyn to find out the address. Luckily, KK was able to provide all our Doughnut Wants, and I got two dozen of the Double K’s finest.

And here they are:

They were delicious, and the Doughnut Party was a rousing, doughnut-filled success.

A Flurry of Santas?

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Last Saturday night–otherwise known as Megan Escapes From the Shackles of Mother- And Wife-hood Night–the Alpha Sparkle Dog and I went to Chinatown to imbibe in some, duh, Chinese food.

We were crossing Canal St. when we spotted a couple in Santa wear; she had on the cutest white tutu, red and white striped socks and a fetching Santa hat. He looked like a dud, albeit a dud in Santa gear. No big deal, we thought. Until more people dressed as Santa started streaming by, and more, until we were engulfed in what Liz deemed “A flurry of Santas!” (note: An Exaltation of Larks by James Lipton; can I say just how impressed I was by Liz’s explication?) It was the SantaCon! Who knew? (The answer to which, of course, is about 2,000 game New Yorkers. Not me, however. I did not know).

Liz has the live action goods at her place, and here is a snap of some Santas doing some sidewalk belt-shopping:

And then one of our entrees:

Marching On

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

The birthday was wonderful! Thanks to everyone who stopped by and spared a kind thought, even if you did not post a comment.

There was dim sum, big cocktail rings, hoisin sauce, pix, awesome gifts (go, Netflix!), sushi, hugs, tear-worthy cards, delish dessert, sake, more hugs, more pix, and lots of non-stress. A good day.

The only thing missing was Clive on my doorstep, but pursuing your dreams is what makes you push forward in life, right?

Today looks to be good as well, with some writing planned. Actually planned!

Yay!

(Yes. It does feel weird for me to be so content. My brain is looking for some potential area of stress. Whatever. It’s all good).

Maa! Maa!

goat.jpgGoats have a reputation for eating tin cans, even though they are actually just investigating with their mouths (something a lot of romance heroines do, too). But if goats really were as indiscriminate in their gustatory predilection as to devour random pieces of aluminum, then I might qualify as a goat. Which is to say, I have eaten all kinds of not going together foods today (Picky Vegetarian, look away now. This isn’t pretty.). See, we’re going away for the weekend, and I hate waste, so today I have eaten a slice of whole wheat pita bread, a bowl of tofu-cabbage salad, and half a container of cottage cheese. Yum. I contemplated finishing off the last of the ground turkey, but that would require effort (I even ate the cottage cheese out of the container, not bothering with dumping it in a bowl).

At least I found some left-over coffee from this morning and am having that, too. It’s not all blah and blah.

But there’s a whole lot more tofu-cabbage salad with my name on it. Sigh.

Loretta Chase at Riskies

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

The Risky Regencies have an interview with Loretta Chase posted today.

Me, I got nothin’. I did have the Most Amazing Meal Ever last night, but since a) I already ate it b) it was at a Brooklyn restaurant and c) reading about a great meal someone ate is probably like trying to describe what makes someone beautiful (i.e. fruitless and pale), I won’t bother. Let me just say: ricotta and truffle ravioli in butter. Oh, and dandelion greens with pancetta. So if when I complain about not losing weight, remind me about the butter. And the chocolate ice cream with hazelnuts.

Back to tofu and green beans today.
