Ongoing…

Monday, June 6th, 2011

So this month is the RWA National Conference, which I’ll be attending, and also doing a workshop (with Liz Maverick). She and I’ll be discussing Social Media, so yay. We know tons more about it this year than last, and last year was fun. I felt knowledgeable and stuff!

I haven’t been writing, but have been pondering new projects and counting WW points so I will hopefully not be as much of a house as I’ve morphed into. Maybe I’ll be less a Florida room, or something. I refuse to buy new clothes. Refuse.

I’m enjoying the nice weather, and the fun Frampton boys, and even survived a weekend visiting my mom (!). Wait–have I become an adult?!? No. I’m likely just tired.

Anyhoo, I do feel kinda (read: VERY) lame at not posting more often here, but I do post a lot of stuff at the day job, HeroesandHeartbreakers.com. I complain less about my personal life there, thank goodness.

This is one of my new favorite songs:

(Yes, those are enormous bear heads).

Move It!

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

This is my latest aural obsession.

In other news, I am still working a lot, and am gradually figuring out how to do a variety of things.

And, hey, I actually managed to work out today! First time in a long time–and I did not start weeping at the gym. Yay!

I haven’t been posting here as often because there just isn’t much to report–I wrote last week, one day, but still haven’t cleaned my baseboards. Le sigh. They just might be the bane of my existence.

Oh, so some links; last week, I blogged (as usual) at the Riskies on Friday, where I drop a little Megan science; then I’ve been doing little bits at HeroesandHeartbreakers, such as nail polish fiesta, and a few other Morning Coffee items.

So–to recap; can’t wait for spring; too busy to write consistently, but still working on story in head; waiting for delicious news from Agent; am still fond of dark-haired actors with accents.

Coffin Gets Me Going

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

One of my favorite musicians is Fela Kuti, not least because his songs are always way over 15 minutes long, so if you listen to just one at the gym while doing your workout, chances are good you’re more than halfway done with whatever aerobic activity you happen to be doing.

So yay for “Coffin For Head Of State,” which kept me going for more than 23 minutes. And then I listened to “Lady” (15 minutes) and ended up with Fela’s son Femi’s song “Beng Beng,” which is only 4:45.

(I worked on the urban fantasy synopsis today, it’s two pages, only a page short of what I’ve actually written on the darn thing itself! I am loving it. I wish I could sit down and blast it all out now, but life and SOMEbody’s son’s need to eat interfere).

Overkill

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

First, some orders of business:

My migraine went away yesterday evening–only to be followed by some back spasms. Fun! See, if I don’t exercise regularly, the back spasms happen. Since the migraine prohibited the exercising, the spasms felt welcome. But today I exercised and stretched, and the spasms have abated somewhat.

Next, All is Right in the World since Liz Maverick, aka the Alpha Sparkle Dog, is back in New York State. She promises to mock me into editing. I hope to edit soon.

And last–this weekend, the Son, the MIL and I went to the Son’s school’s Winter Carnival. They had Guitar Hero set up for the fourth and fifth graders, and of course the Son wanted to participate.

He took vocals, and chose one of his favorite songs, sung by this guy:

It was “Overkill” by Motorhead. After several false starts, my guy got to sing, and he did an awesome job, getting Lemmy’s raspy, snarling vocals just right.

When someone said what a good job he’d done, he replied, “It’s only something I’ve listened to every night for years.”

My little rocker. Heh.

And here he is:

Allow me to put on my Music Geek hat for a minute–and encourage you to check out The Bird And The Bee, which has been obsessing both me and the Alpha Sparkle Dog lately. They have a new record out, and it is just lovely.

See “Love Letter To Japan:”

[Delightful Phone Friend, is it copyright infringement if the band posts the video itself?]

Today I picked up where I had left off–all 12 pages of it–on a contemporary the idea of which sprang up while I was at the laundromat a few years ago. Mind you, nothing in the story has to do with the laundromat, but inspiration strikes in crazy places.

Although whether this is inspired, or merely dopey, remains to be seen. And now I have 18 pages. A 50% gain?

My back is much better, it’s almost as though it had never hurt at all. It’s the oddest thing, my back, but I guess we’ve reached some sort of day-and-a-half-of-pain detente.

Parliament’s “Chocolate City”

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

parliament_chocolate_101b.jpg

Uh, what’s happening CC?
They still call it the White House
But that’s a temporary condition, too.
Can you dig it, CC?

To each his reach
And if I don’t cop, it ain’t mine to have
But I’ll be reachin’ for ya
‘Cause I love ya, CC.
Right on.

There’s a lot of chocolate cities, around
We’ve got Newark, we’ve got Gary
Somebody told me we got L.A.
And we’re working on Atlanta
But you’re the capital, CC

Gainin’ on ya!
Get down
Gainin’ on ya!
Movin’ in and on ya
Gainin’ on ya!
Can’t you feel my breath, heh
Gainin’ on ya!
All up around your neck, heh heh

Hey, CC!
They say your jivin’ game, it can’t be changed
But on the positive side,
You’re my piece of the rock
And I love you, CC.
Can you dig it?

Hey, uh, we didn’t get our forty acres and a mule
But we did get you, CC, heh, yeah
Gainin’ on ya
Movin’ in and around ya
God bless CC and its vanilla suburbs

Gainin’ on ya!
Gainin’ on ya!
Gainin’ on ya! (heh!)
Gainin’ on ya!
Gainin’ on ya!
What’s happening, blood?
Gainin’ on ya!
Gainin’ on ya!
Gainin’ on ya!

Yeah!
What’s happening, black?
Brother black, blood even
Yeah-ahh, just funnin’

Gettin’ down

Ah, blood to blood
Ah, players to ladies
The last percentage count was eighty
You don’t need the bullet when you got the ballot
Are you up for the downstroke, CC?
Chocolate city
Are you with me out there?

And when they come to march on ya
Tell ‘em to make sure they got their James Brown pass
And don’t be surprised if Ali is in the White House
Reverend Ike, Secretary of the Treasure
Richard Pryor, Minister of Education
Stevie Wonder, Secretary of FINE arts
And Miss Aretha Franklin, the First Lady
Are you out there, CC?
A chocolate city is no dream
It’s my piece of the rock and I dig you, CC
God bless Chocolate City and its (gainin’ on ya!) vanilla suburbs
Can y’all get to that?
Gainin’ on ya!
Gainin’ on ya!
Easin’ in
Gainin’ on ya!
In yo’ stuff
Gainin’ on ya!
Huh, can’t get enough
Gainin’ on ya!
Gainin’ on ya!
Be mo’ funk, be mo’ funk
Gainin’ on ya!
Can we funk you too
Gainin’ on ya!
Right on, chocolate city!

Yeah, get deep
Real deep
Heh
Be mo’ funk
Mmmph, heh
Get deep
Bad
Unh, heh
Just got New York, I’m told

Stevie Wonder’s “Black Man:”

First man to die
For the flag we now hold high (Crispus Attucks)

With the flag held in our hand
Was first the redmans

On the first columbus trip (Pedro Alonzo Nino)
Was a brown man

The railroads for trains
Came on tracking that was laid
By the yellow man

We pledge allegiance
All our lives
To the magic colors
Red, blue and white
But we all must be given
The liberty that we defend
For with justice not for all men
History will repeat again
Its time we learned
This world was made for all men

Was first done successfully
By a black man (Dr Daniel Hale Williams)

Friendly man who died
But helped the pilgrims to survive (Squanto)
Was a redman

Farm workers rights
Were lifted to new heights (Caesar Chavez)
By a brown man

By the white man

We pledge allegiance
All our lives
To the magic colors
Red, blue and white
But we all must be given
The liberty that we defend
For with justice not for all men
History will repeat again
Its time we learned
This world was made for all men

Here me out…

Now I know the birthday of a nation
Is a time when a country celebrates
But as your hand touches your heart
Remember we all played a part in america
To help that banner wave

First clock to be made
In america was created
By a black man (Benjamin Banneker)

Scout who used no chart
Helped lead lewis and clark
Was a redman (Sacagawea)

Use of martial arts
In our country got its start
By a yellow man

And the leader with a pen
Signed his name to free all men
Was a white man (Abraham Lincoln)

We pledge allegiance
All our lives
To the magic colors
Red, blue and white
But we all must be given
The liberty that we defend
For with justice not for all men
History will repeat again
Its time we learned
This world was made for all men

This world was made for all men
This world was made for all men
This world was made for all men
God saved his world for all men
All people

Trivial Pursuits

Monday, September 8th, 2008

I went running this morning with Shoulder Guy, and it wasn’t awful! I have to rid myself of my summer weight, because I am too cheap to buy new clothes. Plus I’m kinda vain, too.

And I did a whole bunch of paperwork (like taxes, and change of address, and filing for due monies, and such), and feel way less of a lout than before. Go me.

Tomorrow I write.

This weekend the Younger, and His Friends Are Even Younger Spouse and I go to a wedding. Not sure what to wear.

And I’ve been listening to Vampire Weekend, Friendly Fires, Estelle, Solange and Rodriguez. Go look them up yourself, do you want me to do all the work?

Rain-Freaking-Bow

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

A few nights ago, the Spouse and I caught the end of Spinal Tap. Fine, you say. Funny. You’d be right. But Spinal Tap–and the impending Frantic City trip (it’s a bachelor party, yo)–made him fire up Amazon and download some REAL Spinal Tappish bands. Like Rainbow. And “All Night Long:”

You’re walking up with your eyes on me
It’s looking good but I just don’t know
I need a girl who can keep her head
All night long
You didn’t came just to see the show
I guess you know what you wanna see
The way you smile lets me know
I can’t go wrong
I wanna touch you
I wanna feel you
I wanna make you mine
I wanna love you all night long
I wanna be with you all night long
I wanna love you all night long
I wanna be with you all night long
I saw you standing down by the stage
Your black stockings and you see - through dress
Your mouth is open but I don’t wanna hear you
Say goodnight
You’re sort of young but you’re over age
I don’t care ’cause I live your style
I don’t know about your main but
You look alright
I wanna touch you
I wanna feel you
I wanna make you mine
I wanna love you all night long
I wanna be with you all night long
I wanna love you all night long
I wanna be with you all night long
Your mind is dirty but your hands are clean
You show no class but your legs are long
I know I can’t stand another night
On my own
Hey girl would you like some wine
What’s your name are you by yourself
Are you the one what do you say
Can I take you home
I wanna touch you
I wanna feel you
I wanna make you mine
I wanna love you all night long
I wanna be with you all night long
I wanna love you all night long
I wanna be with you all night long

There’s so much wrong with this, it’s hard to know where to start. First of all, though, is that this incredible lameness DOESN’T EVEN RHYME! And if it does rhyme, sort of, he rhymes “long” with “long.” Nice going, asshat. And third? Third is that if he chose NOT to rhyme, the least he coulda done is come up with some interesting lyrics. No, instead we have “Hey girl would you like some wine?” I’ve heard better repartee in a Kate Hudson movie.

The Spouse played it for me, I listened dutifully, and then I gave him the Look. “You know I can never get those three and a half minutes back from my life, don’t you?” I asked. He just howled some more.  If you wanna see the horror in person, go here:
